Once your parent is granted the Parent Resident Visa, you’re committing to support them for 10 years. This is the heart of what sponsorship really means, and it’s worth sitting with before you submit an Expression of Interest.

In practice, this isn’t about a single good year — INZ wants to see stable, sufficient income proven across two separate 12-month periods within the three years before your EOI is selected.

This is the part families most often miss: if your parent receives state welfare support (NZ social benefits) at any point during those 10 years, immigration authorities can treat that as you failing to meet your sponsorship responsibilities. That can put your parent’s visa at risk, and you may be asked to repay costs incurred by the government or third parties.
This isn’t a technicality — it’s the practical edge of what “sponsor” means. You’re not just vouching for your parent at the application stage; you’re the financial backstop for a decade.
You don’t have to carry this alone. A sibling, or a partner you’ve lived with for at least 12 months, can jointly sponsor with you — combining incomes to meet the (higher) joint threshold, and sharing the 10-year obligation itself.
